Dyrham Park
Head up after breakfast for wide parkland views and a grand baroque
house set in a shallow valley. Stroll the formal garden beds, then
follow gentle paths to viewpoints where deer often graze. The interiors
suit slow looking. And as this is a National Trust property you can be
guaranteed a warm drink and sweet treat. Dog friendly and open daily.
Lacock
Lacock has a timeless, preserved appearance. Another popular filming
location (Harry Potter films, Downton Abbey and The White Princess),
Lacock boasts honey stone streets, timbered facades, and a calm village
feel. Wander past the church and old inns, then explore the abbey grounds
and cloisters. Pause at a cafe for cake before leaving.
Castle Combe
Often described as the ‘prettiest
village in England’ and the
backdrop for countless film and
TV productions including War
Horse, Wolf Hall, Slow Horses
and Downton Abbey, Castle
Combe rewards a short, unhurried
visit. Bathed in sunshine, its
honey-coloured stone cottages,
picturesque bridge and winding
lanes create a picture-perfect
charm.
Iford Manor
A 15 minute drive or 9 minute train
journey with a 1.5 mile walk through the
Somerset countryside, Iford Manor feels
like a secret garden, with terraces, steps,
and carefully framed views. Wander
slowly to admire clipped hedges, water
features, and classical details. The
setting above the valley is serene. Tickets
can be limited, so book ahead.

Bradford-on-Avon
Easily accessible by car or a 15 minute pretty train journey, Bradford-on-Avon is
ideal for a riverside afternoon. Start at the Town Bridge, then wander the lanes
to the canal - the towpath oûers easy walking and good pubs nearby. Browse
the independent shops (we love Piha, La Cotonnière and the second hand
clothes agency Secondhand Rose), or sit watching narrowboats glide past.
Westonbirt Arboretum
Choose your own adventure among thousands of trees. Pick a themed
trail, then linger under maples, conifers, and giant specimens from
around the world. In autumn the colour is spectacular, but every season
has highlights. Wear comfortable shoes; paths add up quickly. Bring
binoculars to spot birds. Dog friendly and open daily.
